Be sure to visit freedom tower and the 9/11 memorial next time you’re in NYC

A visit to New York City is simply incomplete without a visit to the Freedom Tower and the 9/11 Memorial.

The tower stands 1,776 feet tall and lies directly on the site of the former World Trade Center. The tower serves as a beacon of freedom and demonstrates the resolve of the country and, of course, the resilient people of New York City. The site features the Reflecting Absence memorial, which serves to honor the nearly 3,000 men and women who lost their lives in the 9/11 tragedy.

There’s a lot to see and do around the Freedom Tower or One World Trade Center and Observatory. With over 1.5 million square feet of retail space, visitors can check out a variety of specialty stores and high-end boutiques or wander around shopping malls filled to the brim with well known brands.

The National September 11 Memorial Museum has become the country’s primary institution for examining the implications of the attacks and documenting the impact the events had on New York City. The museum can be found within the heart of the World Trade Center site and tells the story of that fateful day through several multimedia displays, narratives, archives and a collection of artifacts. There are three main exhibitions:

  • The historical exhibition comprises the day of 9/11, the day before and the day after. It is the story of what happened on that day not only at the World Trade Center, but also at the Pentagon and on Flight 93.

  • The memorial exhibition commemorates the lives that were lost and is an opportunity for visitors to learn about the people who died.

  • Foundation Hall is a massive room that houses the slurry wall and the tower’s last column.
